Meet Our Mae

As is occasionally the scenario when you meet someone in passing, we never caught our elephant’s name. After a handful of unsuccessful Craigslist NYC Missed Connections posts, we managed to track down a leader at the Save The Elephant organization, who matched photo and date and location. And with that, matched her with our visit.
Mae Kham Paeng is a 52 year old Asian elephant. She lives at Elephant Highland with her "sisters" Mae Pond and Nong Pop. Kham Paeng (Golden Girl) was born in 1971. When she was just a tiny giant, she was forced to perform in elephant shows for tourists. Once she got older and was no longer a "cute" baby, she was sent to trekking camps to endure decades of suffering, giving rides. She was rescued in 2014 from a trekking camp in Kanchanaburi and now enjoys a peaceful life.
“She is indeed one of our oldest and wisest elephants, a truly special lady.”

Save Elephant Foundation

Thanks to the Gentle Giants Elephants foundation, we can now make sure every sale of a LOKA marker helps support her life and soon, we hope, make sure she and her family are taken care of for life.
We won’t stop there. In the near future, LOKA will make donations and investments in organizations that show humans are still human. Please check back on this space for updates once in a while. We’ll make you proud you did.
